The rice terraces of Tegallalang located 10 km north of Ubud (about 25 minutes drive) are one of the main tourists attractions in Bali and for good reason : they offer a unique view of rice paddies built on the slopes of the valley. You can see them from the main road. It is a perfect spot to take magical pictures of your holiday in Bali. The best time to go is either in the morning (before 10am) or in the late afternoon. Depending on your planning, you may just take pictures from the top or you can also hike down and explore the area. The owner may ask you for a small fee to enter their rice paddies.
Tirta Empul is a Hindu Balinese water temple located in the village of Manukaya (near the town of Tampaksiring) 10 km north of Ubud (about 25 minutes drive). The compound was built in 962 A.D. and is famous for its holy spring water used for ritual purification by Balinese Hindu. There are three different sections with bathing structures, two pools and fish ponds filled with koi. In the main rectangular bathing pool, 11 sculpted spouts are lined on one side under each of which pilgrims bow with their hands joined together in prayer.
It is a Hindu Balinese temple located 900 meters above sea level. It acts as protector of harmony and stability in all the island of Bali. It also represents the North and it is dedicated to the god Vishnu and the local goddess Dewi Danu, goddess of Lake Batur (although it is not a lake temple), the largest lake in Bali. The original temple compound was destroyed and then rebuilt in 1926.
Goa Gajah was built in the 9th century and is located 6 km east of Ubud (about 17 min drive). The complex contains both Hindu and Buddhist imagery. You will see various menacing creatures and demons carved into the rock at the cave entrance. The main figure was once thought to be an elephant, hence the misleading nickname Elephant Cave.
Tegenungan Waterfall is located 10 km south of Ubud (about 25 minutes drive). It is one of the few waterfalls in Bali that is not situated in the mountains but it is still surrounded by an impressively green panorama. The amount and clarity of the water depends on rainfall in the days prior to your visit but there is a natural pound at the bottom where you can swim.
